ServiceWorks is a new initiative by the
City of Chicago Workforce Board (CWB) and the Department of Community Development (DCD)  This Workforce Center is charged with the development and delivery of services to the business community that result in expanded employment opportunities for Chicagoans.



ServiceWorks Advisory Board

ServiceWorks is guided by an advisory board whose members are drawn from each industry association, industry employers, and education and training.


WorkNet Chicago

ServiceWorks partners with all of the WorkNet Chicago agencies to provide business services to employers and to disseminate job openings to job seekers throughout the city of Chicago.


Training Partners

ServiceWorks partners with educational institutions and training agencies to link employers with them to meet their employee training needs.  In addition, ServiceWorks partners with training institutions to inform them of employment opportunities for their graduates. 


Industry Association Partners


ServiceWorks is committed to serving retail, hotel, restaurant and customer-service industry employers through its partnerships with national and state associations.

Partners include: the National Retail Federation Foundation, Illinois Hotel Lodging Association, Illinois Restaurant Association, and the International Customer Service AssociationEach  industry partner has a representative that serves on the Center Advisory Board.



Industry Skill Standards


ServiceWorks promotes industry skill standards and provides certification testing.  ServiceWorks links employers with industry specific skill training providers and educational programs.



National Retail Federation Skill Standards

Skill standards in sales and customer service are tools that outline the skills, knowledge and abilities needed by professional retail workers to perform their work successfully. 
The skill standards address both the work itself, as well as the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the work. 
The Standards, approved by the National Skill Standards Board, are the basis of National, Professional Certification in Customer Service.  More information is available at

NRF Certification Testing

ServiceWorks is a testing site for the NRF Industry-Driven Customer Service and Sales Skills Certification. The test is conducted by appointment for individuals and groups up to six.

The computerized test is based on two sets of skill standards:

1.  Customer Service Skills

  • Product and Services Knowledge
  • Assess Customer Needs
  • Educate Customer
  • Meet Customer’s Needs & Gives Support

2.  Sales Skills

  • Prepare for Selling
  • Gain Customer Commitment and Close Sale
  • Develop and Implement a Sales Follow-up plan


Career Paths for Advancement


ServiceWorks promotes industry recognized credentials and skills attainment as a means for career advancement.  It uses these standards to develop career growth and advancement opportunities for job-seekers and incumbent workers.
